A KITWE magistrate’s court has convicted a local court magistrate for corrupt practices involving K1,500 and sentenced her to six months imprisonment with hard labour.
Magistrate Penjani Lamba sentenced Joyce Chikolwa, a local court magistrate at Kitwe Local Courts to six months imprisonment with hard labour for one count of Corrupt Practices by Public Officer contrary to Section 19 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Act no. 38 of 2010.
It is alleged that Chikolwa, a local court magistrate with the Judiciary department, on dates unknown but between the September 1,2011 and October 4, 2011 corruptly solicited for and actually received K1,500 cash gratification from Alice Chisembele and Beatrice Chisembele.
The funds were an inducement or reward for herself to review a judgment which she had earlier passed in a divorce case involving John Chisembele and Catherine Nakamba.
Chikolwa’s sentence is with effect from August 16, 2013 and has since been incarcerated at Kamfinsa Prison in Kitwe where she is expected to serve her sentence.
This is according to a statement released in Lusaka yesterday by Anti-Corruption (ACC) public relations manager Timothy Moono.
