ZAMBIA yesterday ran riot battering Botswana in the 2014 Costa Rica World Cup first round first leg at Molepolele Sports Complex in Gaborone.
Botswana made a false start scoring 46 seconds into the match when Gadzanani Nelson’s thunderbolt beat goalkeeper Edina Phiri.
The goal was a wake-up call for the She-polopolo who took the game to the hosts.
Zambia were on level terms in the 14th minute when Strayer Mubanga scored from a goalmouth melee.
Irene Lungu put Zambia ahead on 17 minutes from a spotkick.
Memory Phiri beat three Botswana defenders but goalkeeper Sedilame Bosita hacked her and Malawian referee Linda Chikuni awarded a penalty, which Phiri scored.
Mubanga’s goal was ruled offside in the 43rd minute.
Lungu accounted for a brace on the nick of half time when she stabbed home with a cracker.
Gorata Morekolodi curled in a freekick in the 51st minute after Martha Tembo fouled Lesogo Radiakanyo.
Zambia got the fourth goal on the hour mark through Jane Mubanga who beat the defenders and the goalkeeper.
Phiri put the match beyond Botswana’s reach in the 79th minute when she connected a cross from substitute Grace Mulaisho.
Mulaisho replaced Margaret Belemu in the 70th minute.
The She-polopolo are expected back home tomorrow.
