Kapiri targets 120,00 U/5 children

Kapiri Mposhi, 18 July 2013, ZANIS- the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health intends to capture over 120,000 under five children during the forthcoming child health week campaign in the district.

District Community Development Medical Officer Charles Mwinuna said the campaign which will run from 22nd to 27th July will be conducted at all the 31 community health henters in the area.

Dr. Mwinuna said the exercise will also be conducted in the peripheries of the district through the mobile outreach system by health workers and community health volunteers who have since been engaged.

190 health workers and 574 community health volunteers have been engaged in the first round of this year’s Child Health Week campaign.

Dr. Mwinuna said this during a stakeholders meeting to discuss the district micro plan and budget for the coming round of Child Health Week activities.

He said six-month to five year old children will be targeted for de-worming and vitamin A supplementation.

“Based on our headcount we are targeting 121,228 under five children with various health interventions at our health facilities and through mobile outreaches .

Dr. Mwinuna said the health teams will also provide other services such as weighing, routine immunizations of children against certain diseases and health education.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mwinuna said the district was still awaiting the delivery of materials and supplies to be used during the campaign.

“We have not yet received doses of Mebendazole and vitamin A supplements for the exercise but everything is in place for us to commence with the program,” Dr. Mwinuna said.

He urged parents to take advantage of the campaign and have their children immunized and assessed for various health problems.
