Mwandi DC commends workshop lessons

Mongu, July 12, ZANIS —— Mwandi District Commissioner, Akufuna Chabi has described the two days orientation workshop for District Commissioners and Planners as successful and educative.

Mrs Chabi disclosed that the workshop brought to light things concerning disaster management that were not  known by District Commissioners from all the 16 Districts of Western Province, adding that there is need for District Commissioners to sensitize communities on the prevention of disasters and how to manage them.

The District Commissioner was speaking this morning at the Provincial Ministers Conference Hall in Mongu district.

She also said that disaster reduction can only be achieved if communities respond effectively to disaster in order to lessen the burden.

Mrs Chabi has since called on the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to respond in an effective manner in cases of disasters in the districts.

Meanwhile DMMU Regional Coordinator, Pumulo Mubita has urged the media not to be alarmists but be factual in the dissemination of information on disaster risks and management.

Mr Mubita stated that media houses should act as key players in controlling rumours and highlighting the need of the people in the country.

He added that the media should be responsible in sensitizing the nation at large on how to manage and prevent disasters.

Mr Mubita further said disaster reduction is a responsibility of everyone hence it requires everyone’s participation not only the DMMU.
