—Lusaka City Council Public Relations Manager Chanda Makanta has bemoaned the continued vandalism of road signs by the public.

Ms Kakanta said the Lusaka City Council has engaged a contractor “ZAMsafety” to work on the road signs and road marks in the city.

She said despite this effort it is unfortunate that some people have been in a habit of removing the signs and using the material for making brazier and other tools.

She told ZANIS in a telephone interview in Lusaka today that the local council is concerned with the high rate of vandalism of road signs.

She wondered why people should resort to vandalizing such important signs amidst the high number of accidents recorded on Lusaka roads.

Ms Makanta further said the lack of road signs on some roads in the city is as result of accidents where drivers hit into road signs and no one reports the matter.

She, however, explained that it has been very difficult for the local authority to effect penalties on drivers that have had such accidents as most of them are hit-and-run accidents.

Commenting on concerns by members of the public alleging that there are few road signs and marks on Kafue road, Ms Makanta explained that Kafue road has been one area that is prone to vandalism due to the community that surrounds the area.

She said it is frustrating to note that while the local council is spending more money on placing and replacing the road signs other people are stealing for selfish motives.

She has since appealed to the public to report any persons found vandalizing road signs.

Ms Makanta has further advised the contractor to use good quality paints on road marks, adding that in the past, contractors that worked on road marks used poor quality paints that easily got washed off as vehicles pass on.
