THE Miss Tourism Zambia pageant, which aims at promoting the country’s tourism, has intensified its countrywide auditions in all the 10 provinces of the country as the countdown to the finals slated for August, draws near.
The provincial auditions began on May 31 at Wasalungu Lodge in Kabwe, where Miyanda Kadolo, a student at Nkrumah University was picked to represent Central Province. After that, followed Northern Province on June 1, where Molly Chipoya, a journalist with Radio Mano in Kasama was selected during the auditions held at Nella’s Lodge.
Lusaka Province is expected to hold its auditions this weekend at the Intercontinental Hotel before the organisers move to Western, Copperbelt, Southern, Luapula and Northern provinces.
Miss Tourism Zambia national director Caroline Makasa told the Weekend Mail in Lusaka that they want to wrap up the provincial auditions by July 6 so that all the contestants can be brought down to Lusaka in readiness for the final to be held in Livingstone during the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly.
Currently, Winfredah Kabwe is the holder of the Miss Tourism Zambia title, and so far, she has represented the country at the Miss Tourism International pageant in Malaysia in December last year and has also been active in the Keep Zambia Clean campaign.
“We want the pageant to be truly national, in the past, we’ve had only representatives from two provinces, Lusaka and Copperbelt… we also want everything to be set because we’re holding it during the UNWTO and we’re inviting people,” she said.
The pageant, which has grown from a loosely organised pageant in 1979 to a high school pageant before its transformation in 2003 to its current national status, is working with the department of Culture and Arts in the Ministry of Tourism and Arts.
Past winners of the pageant have promoted Zambia’s tourism at various international pageants in China, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, Macau, Venezuela, United States, Tanzania and Greece, among others.
