——–The Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL) is concerned at the decreasing number of women holding positions at local government level.

Opening a stakeholders meeting on women in politics project inception in Choma today, ZNWL Executive Director, Juliet Chibuta, said her organisation is now focusing on local government.

Ms Chibuta says this is because the local government is the area where women can easily ascend to decision making positions.

She observed that the number of women participation at local government level has been reducing over the years instead of increasing.

Ms Chibuta says currently Zambia is at 6 per cent representation.

Ms Chibuta said her organisation will ensure that more women participate in the 2016 elections because there is need for more women in that area.

She said her institution is implementing a project titled ‘’Women in Governance: Strengthening the Women in Local Government for Increased Participation in Politics’’ funded with the support of Demo Finland.

Ms Chibuta added that the project will be implemented in Mpika, Kabwe, Kapiri Mposhi, Lusaka and Choma.

She said Choma has been picked because it is one of the places with very few female councillors and Southern Province as a whole has very few female councillors.

This is in preparation for the 2016 elections.
