Chief Government spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni says it is immoral for the opposition to try an d seek political mileage  by raising unfounded allegations against President Michael Chilufya Sata and the Patriotic Front (PF) Government.

He says he is disturbed that UPND president Hakainde Hichilema and other opposition leaders,  in their futile attempt to boost their faltering political fortunes, want to use the unfortunate tragedy for political and partisan gain.

Mr. Sakeni, who is also Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, says the unfortunate loss of life in that incident is a national tragedy which all well meaning Zambians deeply regret.

The Minister said this in a press statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday.

“To insinuate that Government is abetting violence and should be held accountable for the Chongwe shooting incident, as reported in some sections of the media,  is totally untrue and unfortunate.

“  It is immoral for some sections of the opposition to seek political mileage from the Kampasa shooting incident by raising unfounded allegations against President Michael Sata because government has a duty to ensure the safety and security of all its citizens regardless of their political affiliation,” Mr. Sakeni said.

He said contrary to the accusations, Government has a duty to ensure the safety and security of all its citizens regardless of their political affiliation and at no time would Government abdicate this solemn responsibility it has sworn to uphold.

He said all cases of violence are being dealt with by law enforcement agencies in accordance with the provisions of the law and there are no sacred cows as alleged by the opposition leaders.

Mr. Sakeni called on the people in the nation to mourn the departed citizens who died in the Chongwe shooting incident in unity and dignity as investigations into the matter were well underway.

The Chief Government Spokesperson reiterated that government is on record as having not only condemned, but it will also ensure that perpetrators of violence are brought to book as per law established.

On Friday last week, two people from Kampasa area in Chongwe district were shot dead by suspected Zambia National Service (ZNS) Officers over alleged land wrangle.

But Chongwe Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo has appealed to Kampasa residents to remain calm as government is working to address the land dispute.
