Namwala district council has embarked on an ambitious government programme to install street lights in an effort to attain municipal status.

Namwala council secretary Packson Banda however says the local authority has a shortfall of K800 million to complete the remaining 4.6 kilo meter stretch of land earmarked for the project.

Mr. Banda told ZANIS Namwala  in an interview today that the Ministry of local government and housing gave the district K200 million kwacha for street lighting as part of service provision to

councils.

The Namwala Council Secretary said that the K200 milllion has just covered a one kilo meter stretch of the proposed 5.6 kilo meters.

He said that the K200 million has been exhausted and a request is being made to the Ministry of Local government for additional funds of about K800 million for the  4.6 kilo meters stretch.

Mr. Banda has since commended the Patriotic Front –PF government for coming up with a program of lighting streets in rural districts including Namwala.

He said that the street lighting policy wais good as most districts will graduate into municipal councils adding that the country will now have developed towns and districts if such an initiative by the government is enhanced.

Meanwhile, the Namwala Council Secretary has disclosed that the council has reserved about K500 million kwacha to sinking boreholes in the district.

Mr Banda was responding to a question raised by Namwala district commissioner Gevar Nsanzya during a Disaster Management Meeting held yesterday.

Mr Nsanzya wanted to know what the council had planned in order to cushion the looming shortage of water in ponds and dams in the district as a result of poor rainfall in the 2012/2013 season.

Mr. Banda said the council had so far done both the desk and fund appraisals and was the only remaining with the process of mobilizing equipment and human resource from the selected needy areas in the 14 wards of the district.

Mr. Banda also disclosed that the council also plans to construct 15 VIP toilets in selected areas to curb the issue of open defecation.

He said that this will help prevent water borne diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery and cholera.

Mr. Banda added that the Danish aid agency-DANIDA will provide about K250 milon kwacha for the exercise to sink the VIP toilets.
