Suspected criminal gunned down in Matero

-Police in Lusaka’s Matero Township last night gunned down a suspected criminal in an exchange of fire.

 

Zambia Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Esther Mwata-Katongo said following a tip off from the public who were drinking from a named night club in Matero, spotted the said suspect with a firearm.

 

Mrs Mwata-Katongo said in the process of apprehending him, the suspect ran to his black unregistered Toyota Corolla in a bid to escape and a fire exchange ensued.

 

She said in the process the suspect was shot at and rushed to the University Teaching Hospital where he died upon arrival.

 

The police recovered a military pistol with four rounds of ammunition from the unidentified suspected criminal.

 

Meanwhile one person died in Lusaka yesterday leaving another with serious injuries in a road traffic accident which occurred on Mosi-O-Tunya road around 07:30 hours.

 

The driver of a Toyota Hilux registration number ABT 6745 Barnabas Mulenga aged 47 of Nyumba Yanga in Lusaka hit into two pedestrians as he was overtaking improperly hence went off the road.

 

The two pedestrians, a female juvenile of Chalala area aged seven died on the spot while Derrick Mumba aged 21 sustained serious injuries.

 

Mrs Mwata-Katongo said the cause of the accident is a clear indication of a highest degree of negligent behaviour and impatience on the part of the motorist who could not wait for a road to be clear for him to overtake and this caused loss of innocent live.

 

She has since called upon motorists to observe rules and regulations stipulated by the road traffic Act.
