—-The North-western Province Development Council of Elders has strongly condemned suggestions by some sections of society in the country that male birth attendants be banned from administering midwifery services in health institutions.

Development Council of Elders Chairperson, Lukas Chikoti, said his council accepts and appreciates the pivotal role that male birth attendants play in the delivery of quality health services to   mothers and the community as a whole and that anyone against them must be condemned in strongest terms.

Mr Chikoti was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Solwezi today.

He said people in rural areas have in the recent past been enjoying midwifery services offered by both males and females birth attendants in health institutions, adding that any well meaning Zambian citizen must recognize and appreciate this gesture.

Mr Chikoti appealed to all patriotic Zambians to support the existence of female and male birth attendants in both rural and urban health institutions for the betterment of all citizens.
