Lucrative Zambia Open golf tourney launched

The KR3 million rich five day Zambia Open Golf Tournament billed for Tuesday next week at the Lusaka Golf Club has officially been launched.

Organising Committee chairman Robert Chomba said golf was among the sports disciplines which have the potential to market the country’s tourism potential.

Chomba said at the official launch of the tournament in Lusaka today that due to the nature of the country’s landscape, there was need to build more golf courses near all tourist attractions spread across the country in order to attract more tourists.

He cited places such as the Kasaba Bay, Lake Bangweulu and Lake Tanganyika among others as some of the places where golf courses can be built.

Chomba has since called on the cooperate world to come on board and support sports ventures that have the capacity to market the country’s tourism potential.

And Head of Communications and Media Nsama Mataka disclosed that the five day tournament has attracted a total of 144 local and foreign golfers, among them 15 Zambian professionals and 10 amateurs.

Mataka further disclosed that the tournament has a total of KR1.2 million worth of prizes which will see the overall winner walking away with R192, 000 while the other remaining prize money will be shared among the last 70 participants.

Mataka also thanked the media for their massive support towards the hosting of this year’s lucrative golf tournament.

Earlier, Pamodzi Hotel General Manager Sanjay Sood said his hotel was pleased to be part of this year’s tournament.

Sood has since reaffirmed his company’s commitment to sponsoring more future events.

Among the sponsors of this year’s Zambia Open tournament are Toyota Zambia, Southern Sun Motors, Airtel Consortium, Indo Zambia Bank, Zambia Sugar, Investrust Bank, Pamodzi Hotel, Spar Zambia and many other companies.
