16 dead in another Chibombo road accident

Kabwe April 30, 2013, ZANIS ———— 16 people died on the spot when a mini bus they were travelling in over turned about 50 km from Kabwe to Lusaka road at about 06:30hrs this morning.

The sixteen people include eight men and eight women, including the driver of the mini-bus.

The mini bus which was Lusaka bound, had 20 people including the driver and the conductor who both died on the spot while the four (4) survivors who sustained serious injuries were rushed to the UTH.

ZANIS reporters who rushed to the scene, found police officers picking pieces of human flesh that were scattered on the road.

Police Spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela who was at the scene of the accident and Chibombo District Commissioner Felix Mang’wato confirmed the accident to ZANIS.

Miss. Kanjela said the driver of the minibus registration number ACP 3053, lost control of the vehicle following a tire burst and hit into an oncoming Volvo truck registration number AAF 8926 which was loaded with building material.

She said the driver of the truck Nathan Kambayuwa of 42 Makumba Street in Harare came out with minor injuries.

An eye witness, Elijah Moseni explained to ZANIS that the minibus overturned several times throwing passengers out after the roof was ripped off and rolling on some of them.

Meanwhile Chibombo District Commissioner Felix Mangwato said all the sixteen bodies have been transferred to Kabwe General Hospital mortuary due to insufficient space at Liteta hospital mortuary.

Mr. Mang’wato cautioned passengers to avoid boarding mini buses that are full despite pressure from conductors adding that mini bus drivers should also control the speed to avoid losing lives in case of an accident.

In February this year, over 50 people perished at John Chinena when a Lusaka bound Post Services bus collided with a truck on the same road.
