Chief Chikanta of the Tonga speaking people in Kalomo district in Southern province has commended national constitution convention delegates for introducing a new provision in the constitution that will create a caveat against unnecessary by-elections.

The chief said the move to adopt article 75 of the proposed constitution is welcome and that it should be supported by all right thinking Zambians in the country.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka that such an article will curb unnecessary creation of by-elections which he said were costly to the country.

He stated that some Members of Parliament resign from their political parties without realizing that their decisions were expensive and a drain of government resources because the exercises gobble huge sums of money.

Chief Chikanta said MPs will now fear to resign from their parties once such piece of legislation is in force.

The new provision bars Members of Parliament who resign from their parties from re-contesting their seat or being appointed to any public office until the end of the life span of that parliament from which the member has resigned.
