Lundazi farmer in court for marijuana cultivation, trafficking

A 40-year-old peasant farmer of Bandeya Nyambo Farm of Chief Chikomeni Lundazi District yesterday appeared in Lundazi Magistrate’s Court for the offences of unlawfully cultivation and trafficking of psychotropic substances popularly known as marijuana contrary to Section 6 of Chapter 96 of the Laws of Zambia.

Before Magistrate Keegani Litia was Greyson Wandila who was charged with two counts of unlawful cultivation of psychotropic substances namely marijuana, a herbal product of cannabis sativa weighing 530.80kgs and unlawful trafficking of psychotropic substances namely marijuana a herbal product of cannabis sativa weighing 483.57kgs all totalling 1,014.37kgs.

Particulars of the offence were that during their routine patrols in chief Chikomeni in Lundazi district on April 8, 2013, Drug Enforcement Commissioners [DEC] officers, received information that Wandila was growing marijuana and at the same time trafficking the product.

When DEC Officers visited the farm they found fresh marijuana weighing 530.80kgs being grown in his garden farms while dry marijuana weighing 483.57kgs was stocked in his house ready for transportation to Lusaka.

Wandila pleaded guilty and magistrate Litia adjourned the matter for written facts and possible sentencing.
