The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Lusaka has destroyed over 800 kilogrammes of drugs that have been forfeited to the state by the Court.

 

DEC Public Relations Officer Samuel Silomba said the drugs that have been destroyed consist mainly of cannabis, hashish cake and miraa.

 

Mr Silomba said in a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today that the drugs, which were part of the exhibits tendered before the court, have been forfeited to the state following the conclusion of the cases over a period of eleven (11) months.

 

Meanwhile, the Commission has arrested two Zambian women of Monze for cultivating in more than four tonnes of cannabis.

 

Mr Silomba said Maureen Simaumba, 52, a peasant farmer of Meezi village in Monze East was arrested for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 3.1 tonnes while Lavendar Simaumba, 29, a peasant farmer of the same village was arrested for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing 1.2 tonnes.

 

He said the suspects are in police custody and will appear in court soon.

And on the Copperbelt Province, the Kitwe Magistrates court has convicted a Nigerian national for trafficking in cocaine.

 

Mr Silomba said Wisdom Amagbaobi, 36, who was arrested by the Commission on 10th October 2012 for trafficking in five sachets of cocaine has been convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the date of his arrest.
