Zambia Sugar has taken up sponsorship of the annual Zambia International Open Golf championship and have thus rebranded this year’s tournament as the “Zambia Sugar Open Golf 2013.”

Zambia Sugar Corporate Affairs Manager Lovemore Sievu explained that it was because of his company’s focus at imaged building that his management has decided to become the lead sponsor.

ZANIS sports reports that Sievu was speaking in Lusaka today at the handover ceremony of a KR810,750 cheque to Lusaka golf club.

He said it was for this reason that his firm has injected over KR810, 000 towards the hosting of the International Zambia Open Golf Tournament in May this year.

The Zambia Sugar Corporate Affairs Manager says hosting of the golf tournament is good for image building for Zambia especially that the country co-hosting the United Nations World Tourism Organization  (UNWTO) conference this year.

Sievu noted that his company has a long and enduring association with golf as evidenced by its sponsorship of the Zambia Open Tournament and also the consistent support given to Mazabuka golf club.

He also disclosed that Zambia Sugar has spent over KR two (2) million on upgrading Mazabuka club infrastructure focusing on the greens, water reticulation and the club house.

He added that this has seen the club raise standards and be among the top four golf clubs in the country.

And  Zambia Open Chairman Robert Chomba  says KR1.2 has been budgeted for this year’s winner of the tournament, the same amount as last year’s winner.

Meanwhile, Lusaka Golf Club captain Ian Thurai Ratnam has called on all golf enthusiasts to take keen interest in the activities regarding the tournament.

Ratnam said the club was under no illusion that the task to host the tournament will be easy saying that other clubs should monitor how the club does it and see how they can also host the tournament in the future.

He added that the club will utilize the tournament to promote junior golf in the country to help spot local talent.
