Chieftainess Nkhomeshya cheered
Chipata, March 22, 2013, ZANIS…Chieftainess Nyanje of the Nsenga
speaking people in Petauke district  has commended
members of the house of chief for electing a woman to head the House.

Chieftainess Nyanje said that the election of senior Chieftainess
Nkomeshya Mukamambo II was a clear indication that men recognize women
as partners in national development.

She said this to  ZANIS in an interview in Chipata.

She said that electing a woman to head the house of chief was another
indication that the advancement of women had been one of the most
important items on the Zambian agenda.

The chieftainess was optimistic that chieftainess Nkomeshya through
her leadership in the house of chiefs will address the vulnerability of
rural girls and women to HIV/AIDS, poverty and gender based
violence.

She stated that there was need for chieftainess Nkomeshya to sensitize
traditional leaders who were the custodian of culture and tradition to
address traditional norms that disadvantaged and discriminated women
as it had continued to plague rural women.

“Now that the House of Chiefs would be headed by a woman, issues such
as right for women to acquire land will be implemented by traditional
leaders because most rural women were deprived from accessing  customary
land,” she said.

Chieftainess Nyanje further stated she would support the move to
review the lands Act to ensure equal distribution of land.
