Women movement disappointed

Lusaka, March 9, ZANIS ——-The Zambia National Women’s Lobby Group (ZNWL) has expressed disappointment at the opposition political parties Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) and United Party for National Development (UPND) women leagues for shunning the commemoration of International Women’s Day yesterday despite being invited.

ZNWL Chairperson Beauty Phiri pointed out that there was need to celebrate the event as it showcases respect for all women and girls across the country.

Ms Phiri told ZANIS in a telephone interview in Lusaka today that such behaviour exhibited by the two opposition political parties was so unfortunate.

The ZNWL Chairperson also said that MMD and UPND should know that being invited to attend such an important celebration was done in good faith.

Ms Phiri said people need to attend the celebrations regardless of their political affiliations stating that women in the country should be supported.

She praised opposition political parties, other organizations and individuals that turned up in large numbers to support and celebrate the International Women’s Day.

Ms Phiri advised the MMD and UPND to emulate their fellow opposition political parties that showed keen interest by participating in joining the rest of the world to commemorate the event.

The opposition political parties that attended the event were United National Independence Party (UNIP), Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) and National Restoration Party (NAREP).

The ruling Patriotic Front (PF) women’s league in Lusaka was the largest group of marchers that attended the event at the Show Grounds.

Zambia yesterday joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Women’s Day whose theme was “Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum”.

The commemoration is held annually on March 8th.
