NWP veterinary lab project on course

Solwezi, March 7, 2013, ZANIS……. Government has commenced the
construction of a modern veterinary laboratory at a cost of KR 3.6
million in Solwezi, for livestock disease control.

The laboratory which is the first of its kind in the province will be
used in controlling livestock diseases in the region.

Provincial Agriculture Coordinator, Derrick Simukanzye said the
project which is funded by government is expected to be completed by
October  this year.

Mr. Simukanzye said the absence of  a veterinary laboratory in the
province has made it difficult to develop the livestock industry in
the region.

He said the laboratory will assist the veterinary department to
respond to animal diseases on time and also reduce the costs incurred travelling

to Lusaka to take samples for diagnosis and enforcement of standards.

Mr. Simukanzye said the province has been prone to various animal
diseases such as the contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), rabies,
Trypanosomiasis, Anaplasmosis and blackleg which have affected the
development of the livestock sector.

He thanked government for funding the project and said it would go a
long way in reducing animal diseases and improving the livestock
sector.

And livestock farmer James Kitungu commended government for
embarking on the construction the livestock laboratory in the province.

Mr. Kitunga said the project is a relief to the livestock farmers as
it will enhance the control of animal diseases which had adversely
retarded livestock development.
