–Opposition MMD Sikongo Constituency Member of Parliament (MP), Mundia Ndalamei, has bemoaned the high cost of meali-meal price in his area.

Mr Ndalamei revealed that a 25 kg bag of breakfast meali meal is costing KR100 (K100,000) while the same quantity of roller meal is KR80 (K80,000) in Kalabo district in Western province.

He attributed the high cost of meali-meal to the rising water that has flooded and submerged maize, rice and cassava fields.

Mr Ndalamei was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.

The MP said hunger has ravaged most households because the villagers cannot afford to buy meali meal at KR100 and KR80.

He charged that villagers are starving and appealed to the government, through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) under the Office of the Vice President, to urgently send relief food to Sikongo constituency to arrest the hunger situation being experienced in the area.

“DMMU Officers had gone to my area to assess the hunger situation and up to now food relief has not reached the starving villagers. My major concern is the high cost of meali-meal which many people cannot afford to buy,” Mr Ndalamei lamented.

Mr Ndalamei said the Office of the District Commissioner Kalabo was informed and is aware of the threatening hunger and challenged the authorities to act now.

Kalabo is one of the flood-prone districts in the country and experiences hunger every year.
