South Africa, Zambia set for All Africa Senior Squash Championships final

DEFENDING champions South Africa and Zambia were on course for a place in the Team finals of the All Africa Senior Squash Championships which will take place at the Wanderers courts today.

By yesterday afternoon both teams were still undefeated, with South Africa A leading Pool A with six points from three victories, while Zambia A was leading Pool B with six points from three victories.
Namibia struggled, with its A team lying second last in Pool A, while its B team was last in Pool B.
In matches yesterday, South Africa A dominated Namibia A to run out comfortable 9-0 victors.
South Africa’s number two, Christo Potgieter, beat his Namibian counterpart Andrew Forrest 3-0 (11-1, 11-4, 11-3), while their number one Rodney Durbach beat Namibia’s top player Marco Becker 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-5).
South Africa’s top female player Siyoli Waters beat her Namibian counterpart Isabelle Schnoor 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-5).
In Tuesday’s late game, Namibia lost 6-3 to Nigeria B, with only Schnoor managing to win her match 3-0 against Lungdi Dasbak, while Becker lost 3-0 to Tunde Ajagbe and Andrew Forrest lost 3-0 to Sadiq Taiwo.
By yesterday afternoon, South Africa A was leading Pool A with six points, followed by Botswana and Nigeria B on four points, Namibia A on two and Zambia B on zero points.
In Pool B matches yesterday, Zambia A recorded their third successive victory, beating Mauritius 7-3.
Zambia A’s top male player Mwinga Lengwe beat his Mauritian counterpart Xavier Koenig 3-0, while Zambia’s number two male player Manda Chilambwe beat Nicolas Mourga 3-0.
Mauritius’s top female, Vabnessa Florens beat her Zambian counterpart Sharon Chimfwembe 3-1.
Before yesterday’s late matches, Zambia A was leading Pool B with six points, followed by Nigeria A and South Africa B on four points each, Mauritius on two points and Namibia B on zero points.
South Africa, who beat Zambia in the final of the previous All Africa Senior Championships in 2011, now seem most likely to meet them again in this afternoon’s final which starts at 14h00 at the Wanderers squash courts.
The other positional playoff matches for the third- to the tenth-placed teams will start at 09h00 this morning at the same venue.
