Two Kalabo brothers drown

Two male children of the same family have drowned as they were swimming with their colleagues in Kankolola stream in Sibanda area in Kalabo district of Western province.

The children identified, aged 7 and 4, drowned at Kankolola Bridge in the stream today at around   12:30 hours.

According to Sibanda village headman, Mwangala Namenda, who confirmed the incident, the duo drowned when the elder boy was trying to rescue his young brother who was not able to swim in deep water.

Mr Namenda said after the incidence happened some children who were swimming with the deceased two went running to him and reported that their friends had been bitten by some notorious river worms and were not able to swim while others immediately started mourning.

This prompted Mr Namenda with other villagers to rush to Kankolola Bridge where they found the bodies of the two children stuck by the reeds in the stream before retrieving them from the stream a few minutes later.

It was at this point that Mr Namenda phoned the Police who rushed to the scene with ZANIS and found the bodies of the boys retrieved from Kankolola stream.

The bodies are lying in Kalabo District Hospital mortuary
