POLICE in Western Province have arrested three suspected assassins commonly known as Karavinas believed to be behind murders involving people suspected of practising witchcraft in the area, Zambia Police Service spokesperson Esther Katongo has confirmed.

And Ms Katongo said that police in the province had also launched a manhunt for an employee at Nyingo Rural Health Center in Kalabo district, Nyambe Lienda in connection with the poisoning of six people three died while three others are still hospitalized.

Ms Katongo revealed that police in Western Province over the weekend also recovered three AK 47 rifles from three suspected assassins commonly known as Karavinas.

She said in a statement that the suspects, who were believed to be behind murders involving people suspected of practising witchcraft in the area were apprehended after Police carried out an operation following a tip off.

“The suspects were apprehended after a Police operation following a tip off from members of the public. They are currently detained in Police custody and the operation has continued. Being in possession of illegal firearms is an offence hence we appeal to all those in possession of illegal firearms to take advantage of the Firearm Amnesty and surrender them before they are arrested and prosecuted,” said Ms Katongo.

Meanwhile, Ms Katongo said that the police in the province had also launched a man hunt for Mr Lienda, who was on the run.

She said that Mr Lienda had allegedly administered a drug to the six females on September 28th, 2018 at about 14 00 hours on the pretext that the drug was able to cure all ailments.

Mr Katongo said in a statement that after taking the drug, three victims identified as Nosiku Biemba, Namushi Nyambe and Sibeso Biemba died the same day.

She said that the other three, Liyoyelo Nyambe aged 51, Namakau Nyambe aged 66 and Manawa Kalumbu, 52 are still hospitalized at Kalabo District Hospital.

Ms Katongo however said that the drug administered to the victims by Mr Lienda, a daily classified employee of Katoya village had not yet been ascertained.

“Police in Western province are looking for a man identified as Nyambe Lienda of unknown age, a Daily Classified Employee at Nyingo Rural Health Center in Katoya Village of Kalabo District in connection with the poisoning of six people of which three died while three others are still Hospitalized.

“The suspect is reported to have administered a drug to the six females on the pretext that the drug was able to cure all ailments. The suspect is on the run and a manhunt has been launched,” she said.

Ms Katongo appealed to people who could have information on the whereabouts of the suspect to report to any nearest Police.
