The Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) says it is scouting for K176, 000 to enable it to send 15 elite boxers to the zone four Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) boxing tournament slated for this month end in Maputo, Mozambique.

ZBF Secretary General Bright Chomba said his Federation will use the Maputo tournament as part of preparations to ready its boxers for the Commonwealth games set for April 4 to 15, in Gold Coast Australia.

Mr Chomba told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that, the Maputo tournament which will run from February 20 to 25 this year will help shape the boxers like the recent India boxing outing did to David Mwale and Violet Phiri.

Chomba described Zambia’s performance at the just ended India Open International Boxing Tournament in New Delhi as impressive.

He said the performance of boxers David Mwale and Violet Phiri was very good despite being eliminated in the preliminary round of a world-class tournament.
Chomba said the two boxers gained valuable lessons and experience which they will use in future tournaments such as the upcoming zone four SADC and Commonwealth games in February and April respectively.
He said continued lack of finances and sponsorship to minor sports is affecting the development of the sports disciplines.
Chomba appealed to government and the business community to come to the aid of the Boxing Federation to help it adequately prepare the country’s boxers if the country is to reap medals at the commonwealth games later this year.
