QUICK action by alert police officers on Thursday night prevented four criminals from staging a robbery at Mount Meru Filling Station in Chipata.
Six months ago, criminals attacked the same filling station and got away with K126,000 cash.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Alex Chilufya said police officers acted swiftly to prevent the safe from being broken by the criminals who were armed with a pistol and a metal bar.
Mr Chilufya said the criminals went to the filling station with an intention to steal, but they fled when the officers arrived at the scene.
“There was a case of aggravated robbery at Mount Meru filling station in which four criminals armed with a pistol and a metal bar attempted to rob the filling station but our officers acted fast,” he said in an interview.
He said police suspected that the criminals might be the ones who stole from Chipata Catholic Diocese Bishop George Lungu and Father Mathias Mchona Phiri’s apartments last week.
Mr Chilufya said the police had instituted investigations into the attempted robbery.
Meanwhile, police in Chipata have arrested two Malawians and a Zambian for being in possession of Mukula logs.
He said the trio, arrested along Chipata-Lundazi Road, were expected to appear in court while the truck they were using was impounded.
