Catholic nun dies in road accident

TWO people, one of them a Catholic nun, have died while others have sustained injuries in four separate road accidents between New Year’s eve and New Year’s day.
Zambia Police public relations manager Charity Munganga Chanda confirmed this in a statement.
She said a nun, sister Mary Francis Wapakwenda of Mpika, died on the spot on New Year’s eve when a Toyota spacio she was travelling in careered off the road after a tyre burst.
Ms Chanda said the accident happened 37kms north of Serenje on the Great North Road.
She said the driver of the vehicle, his wife and another nun sister Cecilia Mulenga of Mbala sustained injuries.
And in Lusaka, Charles Chilufya Mudenda died on the spot yesterday around 05:30 hours on the Great East Road when his car collided with another.
Mr Mudenda died on the spot, while occupants of the other vehicle sustained injuries.
In other accidents, two pedestrians were hit in Kaoma and on the Ndola-Mufulira road by motorists on New Year’s eve.
In the Ndola-Mufulira accident, Derrick Chindo was hit by a car that did not stop after the incident.
Ms Chanda said in the Kaoma incident, Kakanda Kalaluka, a 79-year-old pedestrian, was hit by a Toyota Corolla and the driver of the vehicle is in detention.
