LUSAKA Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga has warned the United Party for National Development (UPND) to desist from mounting party regalia indiscriminately, in public places such as highways because it could bring confusion.
Mrs Katanga said in an interview that it had been resolved in a meeting the police had with UPND officials yesterday that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) with other stakeholders such as police should be engaged to provide direction in this matter.
“We had a fruitful meeting today (yesterday) at 10:30 hours with UPND officials led by acting secretary general Steven Katuka and we discussed, among other things, the mounting of party regalia in the manner they did a few days ago,” she said.
Mrs Katanga said if such activities were left unchecked they could be a recipe for anarchy because if other parties did the same then there could be clashes.
She said such action could amount to a breach of peace, hence the need for ECZ to give direction on the matter given the fact that the country is not in a campaign period.
Mrs Katanga said campaigns for the 2016 general elections have not started.
Such actions might therefore have a negative impact on the peace that the country is currently enjoying.
