A SIXTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD grandmother has been convicted by a Mansa High Court for causing the death of her husband during a fight.
Before presiding judge Jane Kabuka was Enessi Chipulu of Washeni Village in Chief Mabumba’s area in Mansa District.
Particulars of the case are that on March 24, 2015 Chipulu unlawfully caused the death of her husband John Mandyata with whom she had been married to for 51 years after he accused her of having an affair with one of their grandchildren.
Facts before the court were that on that fateful day, Chipulu and her grandson Kelvin Chipulu went to the family farm to gather charcoal. When she returned, she found her husband drunk and he began insulting her and accused her of infidelity with her grandson. The accusations led to a fight between the duo.
However, as the fight ensued, Mandyata fell to the ground and died.
In mitigation, Chipulu pleaded with the court to be lenient with her as she was the first offender who readily accepted the charge and she said she was remorseful.
She also said the incident would haunt her as they had been married for 51 years.
Ms Justice Kabuka adjourned the matter to November 9 for sentencing
