UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema should stop portraying himself as the messiah of the country’s economy by making unnecessary statements about Zambia’s challenges, Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) youths have charged.

Reacting to Mr. Hichilema’s statement that the economic situation in the country was exacerbated by poor planning, laziness and sheer incompetence by people in government, MMD National youth secretary Bowman Lusambo told the Daily Nation that Mr. Hichilema was overrating himself over the economy of the country despite him having no experience of how to run the country.

Mr. Lusambo said it was absurd for anyone to reprimand the current Government over the performance of the country because some of the challenges were beyond human comprehension adding that even major world economies were also going through torrid times.

“The power outages for example, Mr. Hichilema should be the last person to talk about the poor performance of the economy as it was an inheritance from economic decisions and policies that were made by previous governments.

“Mr. Hichilema must be the last person to even advise us on how we should run this country because he also contributed to our problems during privatisation. This man failed to advise the government well when he had the chance to do so. Our mines were ushered into the hands of the private sector at a give-away price because Mr. Hichilema failed to provide proper advice to the government,” he said.
He explained that there was need for politicians to desist from making statements that had the potential to put them in awkward positions in which they would fail to provide answers to their previous behaviours and sentiments in future.
“In a situation where you promise so much and fail to live up to people’s expectations, they will rule you out. What will Mr. Hichilema do overnight if he was to win an election today? Let us be serious!” Lusambo said.
