THE Kitwe High Court has sentenced a 47-year-old woman of Kawama township to 10 years simple imprisonment for trafficking in 80 balls of marijuana.

High Court judge Mary Mulanda, sitting in Kitwe on Friday, jailed Mariana Ngoma for trafficking in a psychotropic substance.
Ngoma, on April 12, 2015, trafficked in marijuana, a herbal product of cannabis sativa without lawful authority.,

In mitigation through legal Aid counsel Mweendalubi Kapukutula, Ngoma begged the court to exercise leniency on her.
“My lady, despite my client being a second offender, she deserves the court’s leniency as she regrets her actions and has since taken the path of reformation and my interactions with her show that she is ready to be a good citizen,” Mr Kapukutula said

He said Ngoma is a widow and breadwinner of her seven children.
Passing the sentence, Judge Mulanda said she had considered the fact that Ngoma had taken the path of reformation and that she regretted her actions.
