POLICE IN KASAMA HAVE FORMERLY ARRESTED AND CHARGED UNITED PARTY FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT-UPND VICE PRESIDENT FOR ADMINISTRATION, GEOFFREY MWAMBA FOR ASSAULT.

And Northern Province Police Deputy Commissioner, Alfred Nawa has dismissed Mr Mwamba’s claims that they are acting under instructions to arrest him from higher authorities.

Commissioner Nawa said Mr Mwamba who is popularly known as GBM was arrested after police swung into action following reports that suspected UPND cadres assaulted seven Patriotic Front cadres when the two parties collided during campaigns in Bululu ward.

The police chief said police did not want to arrest GBM during campaigns for fear of causing tension among electorates but waited until the elections were over.
And Mr Nawa has dismissed Mr Mwamba’s claims that they are acting under instructions to arrest him from higher authorities saying the police acted in order to arrest opposition UPND leader.

Mr Mwamba who was detained at Kasama Central Police Station for close to three hours later appeared in the Kasama Magistrates Court where he was released after meeting bail conditions.

Earlier in the day, Police stormed the residence of UPND Vice President for Administration, Geoffrey Mwamba.

Mr Mwamba described the action by police as working under instructions from Republican President Edgar Lungu who he has accused of trying to intimidate him ahead of the Kasama Central by-election.

The former Kasama law maker added that the state of affairs has been necessitated following his party’s victory in the just ended Bululu ward by election where the PF has lost the seat.

Mr Mwamba who was by press time at Kasama Central police station further said the ruling Party is now feeling the heat of the UPND in Kasama adding that more favor is coming his party’s way.

He stated that he had once gone through such times saying he will not be intimidated adding that he is now focusing on returning his Kasama Central seat under UPND ticket and the tripartite elections in 2016.

On Thursday, President Edgar Lungu says FDD leader Edith Nawakwi and UPND’s vice president for administration Geoffrey Mwamba risk being arrested for engaging in activities aimed at disrupting law and order in the nation.

Addressing journalists at State House, President Lungu, through his special assistant for press and public relations Amos Chanda, said a security detail had shown that Nawakwi and Mwamba had engaged in terrible political activities that threatened peace in the nation

Chanda further alleged that Mwamba was sponsoring violence in Kasama adding that security services have been following and seeing all these plots.

He said the President had no doubt that Nawakwi and Mwamba had engaged in political mischief, which was unacceptable and that once “credible evidence” is found, the duo would be arrested.
