The ruling Patriotic Front has retained the Bangweulu Parliamentary seat with a landslide victory.

Bangweulu Constituency Returning Officer Liftery Ndaba declared PF candidate Anthony Kasandwe as duly elected member of parliament at 05:27 hours on Friday morning.

Mr Kasandwe polled 9 thousand five hundred and sixteen votes and he was followed by FDD’s Robby Mwansa who got one thousand eight hundred and sixty two votes.

UPND’s Blanco Muma came out third with one thousand one hundred and twenty two votes followed by Independent candidate Prudence Chinamba who got six hundred and fifty three.

ZNBC’s Paul Shalala reports that Christian Democratic Party-CDP- candidate John Kabila polled four hundred and thirty two votes while NAREP’s Morgan Mwewa trailed all of them with a paltry three hundred and thirty six votes.

After being declared duly elected, Mr Kasandwe said he was committed to ensuring that he fulfills all his campaign promises.

Mr Kasandwe said he found it easy to win the seat because he had no major contenders as he stood on a popular party’s ticket.

PF Bangweulu Campaign Manager Davies Mwila said the ruling party will continue with its development programs in Samfya District.

Mr Mwila, who is also Home Affairs Minister, cited the on-going road construction and electrification of rural areas as projects that will continue in the area.

His Deputy Emerine Kabanshi said the Bangweulu by-election had shown that the PF was gaining numbers even in its strongholds.

Ms Kabanshi, who is also Community Development Minister, said Mr Kasandwe’s votes were higher than the votes President Edgar Lungu got in Bangweulu in January this year which shows that more and more people were appreciating the ruling party.

And PF Luapula Province Chairman Nixon Chilangwa said the PF landslide victory in Bangweulu has sealed the ruling party’s grip on power in Luapula Province.

Mr Chilangwa, who is also Kawambwa Central Member of Parliament, said Luapula will continue being a PF stronghold brcause people appreciate the work the party is doing countrywide.

And Christian Democratic Party – CDP President Danny Pule has congratulated the PF for scooping the Bangweulu Parliamentary by – election.

Dr. Pule  has wished the newly elected Member of Parliament to remain resolved in serving the people of Bangweulu well.

He says the margin is too wide for any party to accuse the PF of malpractices.
