Four men were shot dead in Bronville, Free State (South Africa) in what appears to be a case of Good Samaritans becoming victims, police said yesterday.

Three men from Mannys Supermarket were driving in a white Toyota Corolla on Saturday night when they picked up three hitch-hikers, who wanted a lift, said spokesperson Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane.

After the hitch-hikers were dropped off, a group of unknown men jumped into the vehicle, demanding a lift.

“One of the unknown men allegedly opened fire and shot at the driver and two other passengers,” Mokhuoane said.

Three passengers managed to escape and fled the scene on foot. Early the next morning, the two surviving passengers went to the Bronville Police Station to report the incident.

Patrolling police found the bodies of the three men, who were allegedly shot in the vehicle, on Sunday morning, at about 01:30.

The body of a fourth man — a passenger who managed to escape from the vehicle — was found at Thabong near the railway line that separates Bronville and Thabong.

“Two of the three men who were found dead at Extension 19 were identified as Zamelikhaya Nqweliso (39) the driver, and Zolani Qoza (28) who was a passenger.

“The other two deceased have not yet been identified. A case of murder was registered at the Bronville SAPS.”

Anyone with information about the killing can contact the Bronville police. — News24.
