The Young Women for Christian Association (YWCA) has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of a 53-year old grandmother who married off her 13-year old grand-daughter.
The Lusaka High Court recently jailed a 53 year old woman and a 33-year old man and slapped them with 16-years and 20 years imprisonment with hard labour respectively.
YWCA National President Lucy Lungu said it was good that justice, which her organization has been advocating for, has prevailed against the evil trend of marrying off young girls.
Ms. Lungu told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka today that similar sentences should happen in other parts of the country where similar cases are in the courts of law.
She said perpetrators of this kind of vice should learn that the law will now be applied to whoever will be found marrying off their daughters, nieces and granddaughters at an early age when they are supposed to be in school.
Ms. Lungu said the case of the grandmother should be a lesson to the wrongdoers.
She has since urged other organizations fighting early marriages to double their combat against the vice in order to protect young girls.
On Tuesday this week, the Lusaka High Court sentenced a 53- year old grandmother to 16 years imprisonment with hard labour for marrying off a 13-year old girl to a 32-year old man, who has also been jailed for 20-years with hard labour respectively.
