2 die, 24 hospitalized after taking Munkoyo drink

Two people of the same family from Zumbe Village in Mafinga District of Muchinga Province have died while 24 others have been hospitalised, and treated for suspected food poisoning.
Muchinga Medical Officer Francis Bwalya has confirmed the development in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today.

 

Dr. Bwalya said the deceased persons are aged between 6 and 7 from the Silweya’s family adding that one died at home and was brought in dead (BID) while the other died at Muyombe Health Centre.

Dr. Bwalya said the deceased persons were part of a group that drunk suspected Munkoyo drink after taking part in some community work.
He said a team from his office has since been dispatched to Mafinga District to ascertain the cause of deaths and investigate further on the suspected food poisoning.

The Provincial medical officer also disclosed that samples of leftover food and drinks have also been taken to Lusaka for further analysis investigations.

“The information we have now is very scanty on the cause of deaths and the food poisoning in Zumbe Village of Mafinga District. However, we have dispatched a team to go and investigate further, “said Dr. Bwalya.

Burial of the two deceased persons took place yesterday at Zumbe Village.
