TWENTY-NINE people died in road accidents during the Heroes and Unity holidays, police spokesperson Charity Chanda has said.

She said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday that the number of people who died in the accidents increased this year from last year’s 22.
Ms Chanda said 285 road accidents were recorded during the four-day holidays and that this was an increase by 28 over the same period last year.

Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of accidents at 87 followed by the Copperbelt (55), Southern (40) and Central (35). The lowest number of accidents was in Western Province, which had five road mishaps.

“Out of these accidents, 24 were fatal, 48 serious injuries, 63 slight injuries and 150 damage only,” she said.
She said the increase in the number of accidents has been attributed to human error such are overspeeding and non-compliance to road traffic rules and regulations by pedestrians.
