GOVERNMENT has released 1,409 metric tonnes of relief maize to Western Province for distribution to areas that recorded crop failure.
Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) national co-ordinator Patrick Kangwa disclosed on Sunday that Southern, Lusaka and Western provinces are the most affected regions that experienced poor rainfall.
“No one will go hungry; we have in place measures to mitigate the
looming hunger and so far, we have released 1,409 metric tonnes of maize that will be distributed immediately.
This relief maize is for everybody and district commissioners have been advised to start giving out the commodities to our people,” he said.
Mr Kangwa said the drought recorded in the last farming season is also likely to affect livestock.
“We are going to intervene through creation of water points for the affected areas so that animals do not die,” he said. Zambia Daily Mail, KABANDA CHULU
