BEES yesterday stung mourners at Chongwe’s Chishiko village and left one person dead.
Mourners scampered and abandoned the coffin at the graveyard. The incident happened around 11:00 hours.
Headman Chishiko, who was part of the funeral procession is in shock and is admitted to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital in Lusaka.
Chongwe district medical officer Job Mwanza said the hospital received 10 victims and two are admitted to the hospital.
“The headman is experiencing breathing problems and that is the reason we have referred him to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital because he needs intensive care unit services,” Dr Mwanza said.
He said the rest of the victims were treated and discharged.
Dr Mwanza described the condition of those admitted to the hospital as stable.
And gunmen have shot dead a 55-year-old bar owner of Mbala in cold blood while he kept guard at his premises, reports NANCY SIAME.
Northern Province deputy commissioner of police Alfred Nawa has said the robbers gunned down Mr Frederick Lombe as he and his guard kept vigil over the premises.
He said Mr Lombe was on alert because the robbers had earlier attacked his premises, Freddie Leisure Bar, on Saturday and warned that they would return the following night.
Mr Lombe and his security guard Sampa Mukupa were alert when the robbers pounced.
Mr Nawa said in an interview yesterday that Mr Lombe was shot dead around 01:25 hours on Sunday.
“On Saturday, criminals attacked the same place and Mr Lombe decided to stay with the guard on that fateful night so that he could see what would actually happen because the thieves had promised to return,” Mr Nawa said.
He said on arrival at the bar, which is located in the central business district, the robbers demanded to be allowed entry but Mr Lombe and Mr Mukupa refused to do so.
He said the robbers fired a gun shot in the air prompting Mr Lombe to open the door for them and they shot him in the left side of the chest.
“He died on the spot and the body is in Mbala General Hospital mortuary,” Mr Nawa said.
The robbers used a shotgun to kill Mr Lombe and three cartridges were found at the scene.
Mr Nawa said police are nvestigating the matter.Zambia Daily Mail CHRISTINE CHISHA.
