—–Police in Serenje district have arrested a Grade 12 school pupil of Ibolelo Secondary School for dumping a baby in a toilet after delivering.

Both Central Province Deputy Police Commissioner, Edwin Bwaanga, and Ibolelo Secondary School head teacher, Sunday Mukosha, have confirmed the arrest to ZANIS today in separate interviews.

Mr Bwaanga named the 20 year old pupil as Cynthia Kapilya of Zambia Chito area in Chitambo District in Central Province.

The Deputy Police Commissioner said Kapilya dumped her newly born baby around 02:00hrs on Sunday immediately after delivering in a pit latrine in Zambia compound where she is renting with friends.

He said the pupil has since been charged with concealment of a baby and will appear in court soon.

And Ibolelo head teacher, Sunday Mukosha, has expressed disappointment over the behaviour of Kapilya, saying he did not expect her to dump her baby in a toilet since government has introduced the re-entry point for those who are found in such situations.

Mr Mukosha, who urged pupils at the school not to indulge in sexual activities but to concentrate on studies, said dumping a baby is not a solution.

“l am disappointed with this girl. Her parents sent her to learn and not to start bearing children…. I just want to urge pupils to desist from indulging in sexual activities and concentrate on studies,” Mr Mukosha said.

The head teacher, however, thanked government for embarking on construction of secondary schools in a bid to bring education closer to the pupils.

Meanwhile, Serenje Division Fire Officer, Mubita Simasiku, said his team managed to retrieve the female baby weighing about 3.1 kg around 11:00 hours on Sunday.

The body of the baby is still laying in Serenje District Hospital mortuary awaiting burial.
