Lusaka, Zambia (PANA) – Doctors treating Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who is currently admitted at the Maina Soko military hospital in Lusaka, have recommended that the President seeks medical attention abroad.

President Lungu fell ill on Sunday while officiating at the Women’s International Day celebrations at Heroes Stadium in the capital city and was forced to withdraw from the celebrations.

According to President Lungu’s spokesman Amos Chanda, the presumptive diagnosis initially carried out on Sunday revealed traces of malaria and low blood sugar level.

However, briefing the media on Monday at State House, Chanda disclosed that President Lungu who was admitted at the hospital on Sunday, has been found him with achalasia, a disorder of the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

PANA reports that the condition affects the ability of the esophagus to move food into the stomach.

“The Nation may wish to know that President Lungu has a history of the narrowing of the food pipe (medically known as achalasia), which was corrected 30 years ago at the University Teaching Hospital (in Lusaka).

“The tests have revealed that this condition may have recurred and could have led to the low sugar condition the President experienced during the Women’s Day event. A team of senior doctors, comprising physicians, surgeons, pathologists, and radiologists, reviewed these findings and recommended immediate correction of this condition,” Chanda explained.

He said the doctors have recommended that President Lungu undergoes a high tech medical procedure abroad, which is currently not available in Zambia.

PANA recalls that Lungu, 58, was elected President in January 2015 to serve the remainder of the tenure of President Michael Sata, who died at the age of 77 in Oct. 2014 in London.
