Two die in Mtetezi stream

—Two people, a Chinese and a Malawian, last Wednesday died after drowning in a stream in Mambwe district of Eastern Province.

 

Eastern Division Police Commissioner, Eugene Sibote, said the Chinese national, Xia Xiangon, 47, met his fate when he was swept away by a heavy current at Mtetezi Stream as he was crossing it while the Malawi national, Peter Phiri, was also swept away as he tried to rescue Xiangon.

 

Mr Sibote said that the fire brigade from Chipata district, with help from the local community, managed to retrieve the body of the Chinese national last Friday around 09:00 hours while Phiri’s body was retrieved on Saturday.

 

He disclosed that the two were employees of TBEA, a company which was contracted to construct a Zesco power line.

 

The bodies of the two are lying at St Francis Mission Hospital mortuary.
