—The Sianankanga Bridge along Zimba-Nyawa Road in Kazungula district is in a deplorable state following heavy rainfall in the recent past.

The situation has caused panic to travellers and motorists using the route to Nyawa as they fear for their lives suggesting that it could collapse any time.

Musokotwane Royal Establishment Chairperson, Robson Kagutwe, expressed concern over the matter and called for government’s attention to address the problem urgently before lives are lost.

Mr Kagutwe told ZANIS in an interview today that the Zimba-Nyawa route is the busiest road for farmers especially that the food basket for Kazungula district comes from Nyawa central.

He added that it is also the only reliable route to get to Chief Nyawa’s palace hence the need to rehabilitate the bridge as soon as possible.

Mr Kagutwe said the bridge has been in bad shape for a long time now and has reached a point of collapsing any time should the area experience heavy rainfall in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Katombola Member of Parliament, Derrick Livune, had earlier promised to table the matter to the full council meeting so that part of the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) could be channelled towards the rehabilitation of Sianankanga Bridge.

Mr Livune made the pronouncements late last year when he visited the site during his tour of some developmental projects in Nyawa Central in the company of Nyawa Ward Councillor Elias Siamibila.
