Government says it will meet Millers on Wednesday February 17 to explore ways of reducing the high mealie meal and wheat prices in the country.

Agriculture and Livestock minister Given Lubinda says he has  called for the urgent meeting in order to address the escalating prices for the country’s staple food.

Mr Lubinda said government is concerned with the increasing prices of mealie meal and wheat, and the confusion regarding the wheat situation in the country.

The minister has since directed all millers not to effect any increases on mealie meal prices until further notice.

This is contained in a statement availed to ZANIS in Lusaka today by National Agriculture and Information Service Principal Press and Public Relations Happy Mulolani.

Mr Lubinda said his ministry will issue a comprehensive statement regarding the mealie meal and wheat situation in the country after the planed consultations with the millers.

Stakeholders have called upon government to ensure that prices of essential commodities especially mealie meal are reduced following a massive reduction in the pump price of fuel by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) recently.
