Mwense modern market construction stall

Mwense, Feb 5, 2015, ZANIS–The construction of a modern market in Mwense district has stalled.

And Marketeers at Kalanga market have appealed to government to
terminate the contract of Mwamona engineers and Technical Services
engaged to construct the market.

A representative of the marketers Joyce Katongo said the
contractor has abandoned the project adding that he was not capable of
doing the job.

Ms Katongo who is also the Market Trustee said the current structure was in a deplorable state and small forcing most marketeers to trade in makeshift structures which were not
conducive.

Mrs Katongo added that most times their merchandise are exposed to the rains.

The marketeers have since implored government to engage a Chinese
contractor if the project is to be completed.

And when contacted for a comment, Mwamona Engineers and Technical
Services contractor referred all queries to Luapula Province Local
Government Buildings Engineer.

Meanwhile, the provincial buildings engineer Joseph Chungu who could
not disclose much information said his department was considering
terminating the contract.

And a check by ZANIS in the area revealed that the construction of
Phase one of the market which started in 2013 and was scheduled to be
completed in July last year was still at slab level.
