-The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ)
has welcomed the appointment of Justice Ireen Mambilima as Chief Justice of Zambia.

President Edgar Lungu has appointed Electoral Commission of Zambia
Chairperson Justice Ireen Mambilima to the position of Chief Justice
taking over from Justice Lombe Chibesakunda.

Justice Chibesakunda was appointed acting Chief Justice by late President Michael Sata in 2011 and has since then been acting in the position.

This prompted the Law Association of Zambia to question and challenge Justice Chibesakunda’s continued acting in the position.

Justice Mambilima’s appointment as Chief Justice by President Lungu is
subject to ratification by Parliament.

LAZ President George Chisanga said the appointment of Justice
Mambilima as the substantive Chief Justice will help restore public
confidence in the judiciary. and bring to an end the longstanding
impasse that the association faced over the issue.

“This appointment, if ratified, will bring to an end the longstanding
impasse that LAZ has faced over the issue of the appointment of a
substantive Chief Justice,” he said.

“As the public is aware, LAZ has long held the view that the judiciary, as the third arm of government, is an important institution in the governance of the country which must subscribe to the highest standards of integrity in upholding the rule of law in the country.” Mr. Chisanga explained.

The LAZ President observed that having a substantive Chief Justice
engenders the cherished principle of independence of the judiciary.

Mr Chisanga said this in a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka
today.
