The 2015 FITUR Tourism Fair has opened in the Spanish Capital Madrid with Zambia determined to use the annual Fair to attract tourists as well as investors into the country.

Briefing the Zambian contingence shortly before the start of the fair, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Arts Stephen Mwansa, who is delegation leader said the recent positive developments in Zambia’s tourism sector should be used to lure more European tourists into Zambia.

He said the introduction of the UNIVISA between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the removal of Zambia from the Yellow Fever high risk list by the World Health Organization, the recent peaceful elections as well as the general infrastructure development in the country are some of the positive developments that his delegation will highlight in marketing Zambia to the lucrative European market and beyond.

Meanwhile, PS Mwansa is expected to represent the Minister of Tourism and Arts (Hon. Jean Kapata) at a number of sessions organized by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

According to the program released by First Secretary Tourism at the Zambian Mission in Paris Percy Ngwira, Mr. Mwansa will attend sessions looking at sustainable tourism, tourism investment in Africa, destination and sustainable accommodation, using technology for ‘smart tourism’ as well as shopping tourism.

The Zambia Tourism Board considers FITUR Tourism Fair as a strategic window into the European market as it attracts leading operators in the tourist industry representing over 160 countries from around the world.

Zambia also has a lot to learn from Spain as it is one of the world’s leading tourist destinations with over 60 million visitors per year in addition to hosting the headquarters of the World Tourism Organization (UWTO).

The Zambian delegation is being represented by the Zambia Tourism Board (led by Director Finance and Administration Stein Liyanda), the Ministry of Tourism and Arts, the Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (HTTI), First Secretary-Tourism at the Zambian Mission in London Donald Pelekamoyo as well as the Zambian Mission in France (led by Acting Ambassador Philomena Kachesa).

The private sector is being represented by Feeling Africa (who are also offering Spanish interpretation services) and Sanctuary Retreats, the owners of Chichele Presidential Lodge & Puku Ridge in South Luangwa National Park and Sussi & Chuma in Livingstone).

The Zambia Tourism Board has ‘hit the ground running’ in 2015 with three teams currently marketing Zambia simultaneously in three different destinations: USA, India, and Spain, with The Netherlands, Manchester-England, and Dublin-Ireland having already been covered within the first week of January.

The FITUR Tourism Fair in Madrid runs from the 28th of January to 1st February, 2015.
