— Women in Law in Southern Africa (WLSA) has commended President Edgar Lungu for appointing PF Chairperson and former gender minister Inonge Wina as Vice President.

Ms. Wina, who is also PF Nalolo Member of Parliament (MP) takes over from former acting president and vice president and PF Lusaka Central MP, becomes Zambia’s first female person to hold that position in the history of the country.

WLSA Regional Co-ordinator Matrine Chilulu told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today.

Ms. Chilulu said the appointment of Ms. Wina is uplifting women in the country who have been crying for a 50 -50 women representation.

Ms. Chilulu noted that Zambia is signatory to the SADC protocol on gender and much effort was needed towards the attainment of this protocol.

Ms Chilulu said the PF government is determined to recognizing the need for women to take up decision making positions and the appointment has highly motivated her organisation.

She added that the just ended 24th African Union summit on women is a clear indication of Africa’s  commitment to empowering women in the region.

Ms. Chilulu however, expressed concern on the low number of women contesting as presidents in Zambia a move she described they were slowly lagging behind in the governance of the nation.

The WLSA Chief was quick to state that her organisation is addressing to encouraging more women aspire to higher positions which was dominated by their male folks.

And Women for Change (WfC) in a separate statement has also received the appointment of Inonge Wina with happiness.

WfC Chairperson Margaret Maimbolwa said the appointment was a jubilee gift to the women in Zambia who are key stakeholders in the development of the country.

Dr. Maimbolwa said sustainable development could only be achieved where both women and men are recognised.

She pledged to work with President-elect Mr. Lungu and wished him good luck and success as he embarks on national duties.

Cheke-Cha-Mbunda Cultural and Writers Association National Chairman Bosco Chiyengo said the association is elated by Ms. Wina’s appointment.

Mr. Chiyengo said the elevation of Ms. Wina to the second position in the land would help promote economic development in the country.

Mr. Chiyengo said President Lungu demonstrated non-partisan in choosing who to work with.

He urged all political parties to put political differences aside and support government to enhance national development.
