Mama Kankasa applauds peaceful Zambia
Lusaka, January,25, 2015,ZANIS—Former Freedom Fighter Mama Chibesa Kankasa has applauded Zambians for maintaining peace and order during and after the January 20 Presidential polls.
Mama Kankasa told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today soon after she witnessed the inauguration of Edgar Lungu as Zambia’s Sixth President that the peace that Zambia enjoys is its greatest asset.
She has since congratulated the Sixth President Edgar Lungu for scooping the Presidential election in the results announced yesterday where he beat his closest rival Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development (UPND).
Mama Kankasa said despite the Presidential race being tight she was impressed that the people of Zambia continued to remain calm.
Mama Kankasa said she was happy that the transition period was peaceful and that the opposition has conceded defeat.
She said as a freedom fighter it was comforting to note that Zambia still continues with the freedom that they fought for.
Mama Kankasa further thanked government for organising the inauguration ceremony well, adding that it was colorful.
And losing Presidential candidate for the Fourth Revolution Party Eric Chanda has congratulated the Patriotic Front for its victory.
Mr. Chanda said he was impressed with his party’s performance at the just ended Presidential elections.
He said his party had performed well despite being new on the scene and hoped that it would remain stronger.
Mr Lungu has since been inaugurated as the sixth President of Zambia at a colourful ceremony attended by over 50,000 people at the National Heroes stadium including President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and his wife Grace, the Prime Minister of Swaziland and several representatives of Heads of States and governments from the SADC region and beyond.
President Lungu was accompanied to the swearing-in ceremony by his wife Esther.
