An 11 year old boy of Chief Machiya’s area in Mpongwe district has died after being attacked by a crocodile along the Kafue River.
The incident occurred around 18:00 hours yesterday when the boy identified as Boyd Musogwa went to fetch water at the river.
Machiya Kasonga ward councillor Boniface Chushi confirmed the incident to ZANIS in an interview stating that the river was heavily infested with crocodiles and claims an average of five lives from crocodile attacks annually.
Mr. Chushi bemoaned that the river has continued to claim lives as it is the main source of domestic water use as there areinadequate boreholes in the area.
He further stated that water rigs used for drilling boreholes are too heavy for the pontoon which is the only source for crossing the crocodile infested river hence leading to insufficient water points in the area.
Mr. Chushi has since appealed to local authorities in collaboration with the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) to assist in mitigating risks associated to water shortages in the area.
